I only have 6 staff working for the business. Surely itís not worth giving them a contract is it?

Recent employment tribunal decisions have made it clear that when someone is employed a contract of employment exists - whether it is in writing or not. Every employee has to receive a written statement of particulars of employment specifying required basic information not later than two months after they start work.

A well written, clear and up to date employment contract is essential to ensure that all staff are in no doubt as to the terms and conditions of employment.

One of my members of staff keeps taking time off sick. What can I do to manage this?

By implementing a sickness absence policy your business can express what is expected of employees when they are unfit to come to work and it can outline any sickness payments payable during periods of sickness absence. In many cases long or unacceptable periods of sickness absence are as a result of the employee feeling unhappy or under stress at work. Adiutrix Consulting can provide advice and recommend a course of remedial action in cases such as this.

How can I deal with a member of staff who is not performing his/her role effectively?

A basis appraisal system can ensure that all employees are clearly advised what is expected of them in carrying out their role and individual tasks. Through appraisal, line managers can provide objective and timely feedback to employees to improve performance.

In extreme cases it may be necessary to follow a disciplinary policy and offer clearly documented warnings to individuals if they do not improved their performance. Adiutrix Consulting can offer advice and support in cases such as this.

I know some of my staff need training, but Iím not sure exactly what they need. What can I do?

Adiutrix Consulting can carry out a training needs analysis for some or all of your staff to identify where training is required. This is done by interviewing staff and their line managers and assessing skill levels. Adiutrix Consulting will then be able to make recommendations to address these training needs which are in line with budgets.

Why should I bother introducing HR policies?

An up to date set of employment policies and procedures can help your business to comply with existing or new legislation and protect against legal claims. They also formalise any agreements you may have made with your staff and avoid any ambiguity. This will help as the business grows.
